Subterranean & Arboreal Termites- (on timber)

Subterranean termites are creamy brown with six legs. They are long, narrow and oval in shape and measure 1/8 inches. They have antennae and they can fly.
There are approximately 40 species of subterranean termites in Trinidad and Tobago. Closely akin to these are the arboreal termites “Nasutitermes” of which there are 8 species. However, only a small number of these are normally found in the built environment. While these geneses have differing biologies and there are a variety of methods of treatment that may be employed, for the purpose of control, the two can be considered as one and the same.
Subterranean and arboreal termites live in vary large colonies that may be made up of millions of individuals. It is because of the size of this well organized and regimented work force, that they are able to create so much destruction in such a short time, if left unchecked. Additionally, in more recent times, is the improper harvesting of trees and hence the sale of poor quality lumber, the application of improper treatments or the non-observance of the required protocols in the treatment process and a host of wood fiber based products that are susceptible to attack.
